Sriracha and Green Onion Biscuits with Country Mushroom Gravy

Sriracha and Green Onion Biscuits
 with Country Mushroom Gravy.
Carlos and I made this because a Facebook friend requested it.
It's listed in the Breakfast section of The Veggie-Lover's Sriracha Cookbook.

Carlos made the gravy while I got the biscuits together. It was my first time ever making biscuits, and I got irritated with how sticky the dough became. But it was kind of perfect. Very much reminded me of the cheesy biscuits at Red Lobster, only instead of cheese, there's sriracha and green onion. It was the perfect amount of spice, too. Well, perfect for my "Canadian mouth"-direct quote from Carlos.
He said it was good for his Chilean mouth, as well. It was nice because it didn't completely take over the way the other ingredients tasted. It was a good accent.

It was nice to have the gravy as a dip for the biscuits. I've gotten much better with mushrooms. Prior to becoming vegan, I could not stand the taste or texture of them, but I've been forcing myself to be more open-minded, and I've come a long way. It was flavourful gravy, and the fresh rosemary that the recipe calls for was a great taste. You really can tell the difference between dried spices and fresh spices.

As stated earlier, this recipe is found in the breakfast section, but we made it for supper. Partly because I neglected to pick up cremini mushrooms, green onions, or shallots. But mostly because I never thought of gravy as a breakfast food. Plus I made gluten-free buckwheat pancakes with bananas and strawberries from Isa Chandra Moskowitz's Vegan Brunch this morning.

Overall, pretty simple, very tasty.

Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar

Holy YUM!
I have several of Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero's cookbooks, and they're all really delicious! Okay, not the books themselves, I haven't tasted them, but the recipes!
Mwah!
Simple instructions(which is important to me and my brain injury), and fairly common ingredients. Although only recently have all of the ingredients been easy to find...so that's AWESOME!

Yeah mainstreaming veganism!

The book starts with 'Cookie Science', which goes over the different ingredients we may not be familiar with(such as sucanat and brown rice syrup), tools, substituting and troubleshooting.

I have to mention that I love their writing style!
Reading over the instructions is like baking with a friend. You know, that fun, but annoying friend that seems to know how to make everything(bitches!).

Then there are the recipes. Wow. There's a lot.
Nice variety of different types of cookies. There's(and these are just the categories) drop cookies, wholesome cookies, bar cookies, fancy cookies, and sliced & rolled cookies.

I've had this book since mid-September 2010, according to amazon.ca, and I have made a couple recip, okay several recipes.
You can really tell where my heart lies(chocolate & peanut butter). Boy howdy, I love that stuff!
I have made:
  • Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Chocolate Fudgy Oatmeal Cookies
  • Chocolaty Crinkle Cookies
  • Peanut Apple Pretzel Drops
  • Peanut Butter Crisscrosses
  • Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Caramel Pecan Bars
  • Peanut Butter Blondies
  • Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Brownies
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Pillows
  • Chocolate Chip Chai Spice Shortbread
  • Roll-And-Cut Sugar Cookies
  • Chocolate Cut-Out Cookies
  • Gingerbread Cut-Out Cookies
  • Swedish Chocolate Balls

    All really good!!

I completely recommend this book to any cookie-lover, vegan or not!

Christmas Time 2011

I won't be blogging for a few days.

I don't imagine I'll have time on Christmas Day, since Troy and I are seeing both our families that day. The days surrounding Christmas Day, are not as booked but I'm not confident I'll have any energy left  to write. I would sort of like to reserve any energy I have for family events. Tis the season.

My energy level and fatigue has improved. It took 3 days of napping and resting to recover from anything like this last year(being around other people is exhausting) and I suspect, it won't take as long to restore my energy. Go Brain!

But! Tonight, to kick off the holidays, Troy and I are hosting Vegan Christmas Dinner with our good friends, Katie and Riley!
Since they did The 30-Day Vegan Challenge with Troy in September 2011, we've been alternating who hosts dinner on Thursday evenings. It's been delicious!!

Today, I'm using the cookbook my dear, good friend, Lindsay got me for my 30th birthday, Vegan Holiday Kitchen by Nava Atlas! We're having Maple-Pecan Sweet Potatoes, Creamy Dilled Cucumbers, and Citrus-Roasted Tofu. For dessert, we're having Old Fashion Chocolate Pudding Pie from Vegan Pie In The Sky by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero. Made the pie yesterday. Should be amazing!
